The Onyx Downtown screens Barbara Kopple's Academy Award-winning Harlan County, U.S.A. at the Nevada Theatre in a restoration marking the film's 50th anniversary. Kopple's crew filmed a thirteen-month strike in a small Kentucky mining town, including confrontations with strikebreakers, police and company men.

The soundtrack draws on recordings by Hazel Dickens, Merle Travis, Sarah Ogan Gunning and Florence Reece. Screenings at the Nevada Theatre carry no age restriction, though not every film is suited to children.
